Help Me Make a Decision on a New Pair of Sennheiser 600 Series
I have a pair of HD600 that have been well worn and loved for a decade now. They are my daily headphones, used 4-6 hours a night which I occasionally rotate out with Focal ELEX and Audeze LCD-X (and super occasionally Fostex Purpleheads when I decide I want to clean my ears out). I've changed the pads every other year and it's definitely time for pads again.
I've had a big predicament though. They look really roughed up. Paint is chipping off and an earcup doesn't really hold itself on very well anymore. Plus, even without the cosmetic wear, they are that ugly blue marble pattern. They sound great otherwise, but I feel like I need a new pair, and every time I see the price is right on Amazon I get an itchy feeling.
I am having a hard time choosing if I want a replacement pair, or something different in the same line. The HD650s are about $50 more usually, but I've heard have a bit of a Bass Bump. The 660S2s are a $100 jump from there, and I've heard people say they love them and some people hate them. The HD6xx and HD58x are also in the running but I heard not too long ago Drop was going through hard times and Corsair may/ may not continue selling them?
On the one hand, I love the sound of the HD600 I have now, and I'd be able to keep them, but on the other hand, if I get something different and don't like them as much the new pair might end up sitting around and I just go back to the ol' reliable.
Genres I listen to are wide and varied. Alt. Rock, Classic Rock, Jazz, Metal, Hip-Hop, Rap, Soundtracks, Orchestral, EDM, UK Dubstep, Norwegian Tribal Folk, you get the idea. I'll listen to most anything except Country.
I have a Gen 1 Jotenheim with a Modius and a TA-10R and a few Dongle Dacs I don't usually use with Headphones but may on occasion use them. Generally at high volumes they have handled the HD600 fine. Thank you for any advice!
