Hello /r/classicalmusic !
These two scores have strong similarities in how they both evoke a very specific feeling of early 20th century Central Europe, written for small orchestra/chamber ensemble, prominent woodwinds with wonderful solo melodies, moments of whimsy, moments of melancholy, a stateliness, and the incorporation of Slavic, Eastern European, or 'Gypsy' inflections, ornamentations, and tonalities gently mixed in throughout.
They are two of my favourite scores and this is something rather specific I have in common with my friend who is directing a small indie film that I'll be scoring for.
I would very much like the help of you aficionados to find authentic source material from the aforementioned time period and area, to deepen the work and further inspire me, and maybe teach me a couple of things :) Your suggestions will be very much appreciated!
On my list already, thanks to simply Googling to the best of my ability, are some works by Schulhoff, Françaix, and Martinů.
