Do I need to scrap my MacBook?
Hey everyone, after years of lurking on Reddit I finally found a good reason to open a post — obviously for help and advice. I'll try to be as concise as possible (I think I've already failed).
MacBook Pro 2017 15" with Touch Bar (model 14,3). Bought at launch, used through university, streaming, some photo and video editing, and now for learning Python. Perfect for my needs, still performs well after almost 10 years.
The battery however has been replaced twice. The last time was a year ago, by a third-party repair shop, at a cost of €190. Everything was fine since then — until yesterday. After pushing it a bit using Claude and VS Code with a second monitor, I decided to take a break, unplugged it from power to watch a video in bed (don't get any ideas), and it started slowing down dramatically. Until eventually it shut off.
Panic. I turned it back on but it shut down again at the Apple logo. I searched online, tried SMC reset, PRAM reset, hardware diagnostics, and eventually it booted again. But without the charger performance drops off a cliff, to the point where it freezes — apps won't open or close and I'm forced to hard shut it down. I tried Safe Mode, still slow, tried reinstalling Ventura, no change.
I'm starting to think it's the battery, even though CoconutBattery doesn't show any issues. Could it be something else? The logic board? I'll be honest, I know nothing about hardware.
I'm writing this from the Mac right now, with the charger plugged in, and everything is fine. I believe what happened yesterday was a kernel panic — I tried to investigate the cause with AI and the only really draining process was WindowServer.
Apologies for the lengthy post, but maybe some expert out there can point me in the right direction. I'd replace the battery again, but I really don't want to spend another €200, and doing it myself with iFixit I'd definitely break something.
Thanks so much to anyone who replies.
