Random Indie Wrestling Review - 1PW Fight Club (May 2006 - feat. Takeshi Morishima, Mohammed Yone, boring matches & a Pre-Show Q&A Panel)

Welcome to another Random Indie Wrestling Review as I take a look at random indie shows from my giant list that is forever growing. This time around I've picked a show that will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in a few weeks from now, so why not give it a watch and see if it was any good. The idea behind the 1PW Fight Club shows was to showcase more UK wrestlers given that 1PW’s main shows from this era contained a lot of imports, mainly from TNA. This show took place in the middle of their Know Your Enemy shows that took place the same weekend this show takes place with this being the afternoon show before Know Your Enemy Night 2. It also took place after a Q&A that had just wrapped up but we'll cover that after the show. With that in mind, lets take a look at the first ever 1PW Fight Club

It’s Saturday afternoon May 27 2006 and we’re in front of about 600 people at The Dome in Doncaster, England. Joe Dombrowski & Dean Ayass are our commentators for this show as we jump straight into the entrances of the first match. Not much happened on this day according to OnThisDay.com, excluding Cannes Film Festival. In the world of music, "SOS" by Rihanna was number 1 on the US Billboard Charts while the UK's number 1 song on the charts was "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley

Match 1 – Battalion & Ruffneck vs Darkside & Wolfgang
We have Pain Inc (Battalion & Ruffneck) taking on T2K (Darkside & Wolfgang) and nope I have no clue what T2K stands for either. At this time T2K were on their third reign as the British Championship Wrestling Tag Team Champions in Scotland. Pain Inc come out to “Some Kind of Monster by Metallica” for entrance music and I still can’t work out if that album was bad or not. I also see that Battalion has stolen Tazz’s ratty towel from ECW and one of Christian’s old fishnet vests for his look. Also, you can tell this is a show with less care put into it unlike the Know Your Enemy shows as Dean Ayass on commentary is wearing an England football shirt. It’s doesn’t take long to notice all the empty seats for this afternoon's show and it doesn’t take long to spot that our crane camera is being filmed in widescreen while the ringside camera are being filmed differently (4:3 ratio). Very annoying. Pain Inc jump T2K to start as I’m pretty sure the opening bell never rang. Double Slingshot Cannonballs by T2K allows them to fight back as we’re told on commentary that Battalion is a substitute for an injured Sabotage. This widescreen crane cam is already annoying me and it’s only been used three times. These 1PW DVDs were sold in HMV like this back in the day and this is the quality we had to deal with! I’m already losing interest in this match as I spot a banner advertising Fighting Spirit magazine… I miss them. Even commentary aren’t interested in this match as they’re talking about England and Scotland’s relationship. Then, randomly, Dean Ayass on commentary says “Ruffneck makes 50 Cent look like a pussy”. Press Slam into a Spinebuster by Ruffneck as this crowd is dead and this match has been all Pain Inc beating up Darkside for 90% of this match. Spear by Battalion which Joe Dombrowski on commentary calls a Clothesline “aimed low”. Release Overhead T-Bone Suplex by Battalion gets a two. Drop Toe Hold into a Rear Naked Choke by Ruffneck but Darkside fights free but Ruffneck remains in control. Wolfgang is finally tagged in for his first involvement since the start of the match and had to awkwardly wait for Ruffneck to react to the fact he’s in the match now. Wolfgang then misses a Swanton Bomb allowing Pain Inc to hit their Fubar finisher (better known nowadays as The Magic Killer) to win at 8:46. This was a boring opener and this crowd was dead throughout the whole match. It was a one sided extended squash

Match 2 – Darren Burridge vs Nigel McGuinness
I forgot how bad Burridge’s self produced entrance music is which makes me very confused. At the start of the song, he flirts with a woman who rejects him so he calls her a “lesbian” then, during the chorus he sings “get down on your knees and pleasure me you slag”… did I mention that Burridge is a babyface? Speaking of Burridge, is there a reason Burridge has the Ford logo on his trunks here? I know his gimmick is that he's a chav but are chavs known for driving Fords? Also, at this time, Nigel McGuinness was the ROH Pure Champion. We open with some nice looking chain and technical wrestling which eats up a lot of the match time as commentary tells us that Burridge is working with a hurt knee but it’s nothing too serious. The technical wrestling ends when Burridge hits a Tope Suicida onto Nigel after whipping out his fluffy dice from his trunks. Nigel fights back and hits The Governor’s Crumpet (a Hammerlock DDT) for a two. Back to technical wrestling as Nigel locks in a Cobra Clutch. Uppercut by Nigel who wants to try and win this match by KO but Burridge fights back. Both men then trade uppercuts until Burridge gets a two from a Backslide. Urinage by Burridge gets a two. Burridge then hits The People’s Asbo for a two. Lariat by Nigel gets a two. Nigel then hits his Tower of London finisher dropping Burridge right on his head for a two. Burridge fights back and locks in his Chav Lock (it’s a Hammerlock Octopus Stretch) finisher but Nigel breaks free. Rollup by Burridge out of nowhere gets the win at 16:46 meaning Burridge just beat the then-current ROH Pure Champion CLEAN! Post match, Nigel is upset that he lost and gets in Burridge’s face about it but he’s does accept Burridge’s handshake and even dances with him**.** This was a nice technical match and easily the match of the afternoon. I would recommend this but good look finding it online as it doesn’t exist except behind a paywall or if you have this show on DVD like I do

Match 3 – Iceman vs Martin Stone
Stone at this time was the current IPW:UK Heavyweight Champion and one half of the FWA Tag Team Champions along with Stixx. Strong lock up to start as Dean Ayass on commentary says that this is the first time these two have faced off which was true. Both men trade chops until Stone takes control hitting a rough looking Suplex for a two. Both men then take turns slapping each other in the spine which barely fazes either man. Shoulder barges by both men doesn’t budge either man as we get a scattering of “Boring” chants as Dean Ayass on commentary says “This is like two tanks playing a game of chicken”. Into the guardrail goes Stone which bends in half. Into the guardrail goes Iceman which bends and folds in on itself as we get “You Killed Iceman” chants. This woke up the crowd for the first time all show. Iceman fights back and hits his Cannonball finisher but Stone no sells it. Samoan Drop by Stone but Iceman no sells it. Running palm strike by Iceman but he misses his follow up Cannonball. Lariat by Iceman gets the win at 7:39. Post match, Iceman flips off Stone instead of shaking Stone’s hand then threatens to deck a kid wearing a John Cena shirt**.** This was a hard hitting match but the pair of them no selling most of each other's offence to no crowd reaction hurt this one

Match 4 – Andy Boy Simmonz vs Chad Collyer
We open with a botch as our ring announcer starts doing the introductions for Collyer during Simmonz’s entrance. We open with Simmonz in control to start as commentary tells us that Simmonz was a substitute for Justin Credible last night to team with Lance Storm in the 1PW Tag Team Championship tournament taking place over the two Know Your Enemy shows which was true. In fact, Lance Storm actually wrote on his own website at the time that teaming with Simmonz ruined his experience on the first night at 1PW saying “No offence to Andy but when the original plan is The Impact Players vs [AJ] Styles & [Christopher] Daniels, inserting Andy Local to the mix is a huge let down”. As both men do some technical wrestling to silence, we see a “Blue Meanie is Ace” sign. As all of this is happening, commentary is putting Collyer over a lot while saying that he was trained under Dean Malenko. We then get a lot of nothing noteworthy happening until Collyer hits a slow looking German Suplex for a two. Superplex by Simmonz gets a two. Victory Roll by Collyer gets a two. Sunset Flip by Collyer but Simmonz sits on him and holds onto the ropes to win at 8:25 to no crowd reaction in a match that screamed filler and no one cared about it

Joe Dombrowski is in the ring now to conduct an interview with Spud. Outcomes Spud holding his neck still feeling sore from his match with Sterling James Keenan aka Corey Graves last night. Joe asks Spud about how he feels right now and Spud calls SJK a “piece of shit”. Spud then says people have always told him that he’s too small to be a wrestler then claims that SJK and Abyss are lovers. Outcomes SJK who no sells being shoved by a kid in the front row as SJK is dressed like he’s on holiday complete with wearing flip flops. Who goes on holiday to Doncaster? After SJK makes fun of the kid in the John Cena shirt, he says he could’ve beaten Spud last night in three minutes but wanted to enjoy his time beating him up. He then accuses Spud & Ulf Herman of being lovers and says Ulf is currently in the hospital. SJK then says he won’t wrestle this afternoon but says he has found some “opponents” for Spud to face right now

Match 5 – Handicap – Dave Mastiff & Jack Storm vs Spud
At this time Mastiff & Storm were the IPW:UK Tag Team Champions and collectively are known as Team Supreme. No one has any idea who they are but thankfully Dean Ayass on commentary gives us all context about them for those watching on DVD. Mastiff & Storm trap Spud in the ring to start then jump him as this match is basically a one sided ass kicking. Double Underhook Backbreaker by Mastiff gets a two. I should note that Mastiff & Storm aren’t tagging in and out as we’re using tornado tag rules. Spud fights back by botching moves then hitting a Satellite Headscissors. Weak looking Big Boot by Storm sets Spud up for Mastiff’s weak looking Chickenwing Suplex to win at 5:10 in a boring one sided affair that was more story than match

Post match, SJK grabs a mic to say that Spud will never make it in wrestling while choking him with his flip flops. SJK then threatens to kill Spud then challenges him to a Street Fight at Fight Club 2 on July 1st in Barnsley. As Spud gets taken away, SJK gets a chair hurled towards him by Steve Corino, who had just ran out to try and attack SJK, after SJK bragged about how Abyss choked Corino’s son, Colby, last night then flew him to the mat as everyone treated this like Colby had actually died... I'm not kidding! I was there! Corino gets in the ring and is immediately swarmed by security as SJK leaves with Mastiff & Storm as it's clear that those two are SJK's hired hitmen. Corino then grabs the mic to call SJK a “big [homophobic slur]” while bragging about having kids unlike him. That doesn’t anger SJK but having Corino make fun of him for wearing nail polish does! Corino then says “What gay guy did you sleep with in Doncaster last night?” then demands 1PW owner Steven Gauntley add SJK to tonight’s 1PW Heavyweight Championship match with Abyss & Christian tonight to make it a 4-way but this never happens but Corino vs Abyss vs Christian would be made a Survival of the Sickest match which saw Corino hung from the balcony and falling through two tables and a lot of cardboard boxes

MAIN EVENT – 3CW Heavyweight Championship – Takeshi Morishima (c) vs Doug Williams vs Jody Fleisch vs Jonny Storm vs Mohammed Yone
We have lot of champions here so here’s a quick rundown
- Morishima & Yone were the current GHC Tag Team Champions and even defended them last night against Doug Williams & Nigel McGuinnes to a 30 minute time limit draw which, according to Doug Williams, was meant to be a 60 minute time limit draw but NOAH agreed to the match going 30 minutes due to time constraints
- Takeshi Morishima is the current 3CW Heavyweight Champion having won the belt 2 weeks prior to this show in a 6-way at a 3CW show in Billingham and even defended the title at a RDW show in Skegness 3 days prior to this show against Dragon Aisu & Hade Vansen
- Storm & Fleisch would go on to become the first 1PW Tag Team Champions later after this show beating AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels in a tournament finals
- Jonny Storm on his own was the International Catch Wrestling Alliance Junior Heavyweight Champion in France
- Doug Williams was the European Wrestling Association Intercontinental Champion in Austria

And in case you’re wondering why the 3CW Heavyweight Championship being defended here in 1PW?… you got me as it’s never explained. I see the 3CW Heavyweight Championship is pretty much “That One Replica Belt”. We’re using tag rules to start so only Storm & Williams get us started as Dean Ayass on commentary tells us that Williams is the former 3CW Heavyweight Champion but wasn’t pinned or submitted in the aformentioned 6 way. Electric Chair Drop by Williams but Storm is quick to fight back by hitting a Twisting Tope Suicida. Fleisch & Yone are now in but Morishima quickly tags himself in as our referee keeps walking in front of the camera, Storm & Fleisch then mess up a tag move which makes one fan yell “Oh Dear!” Time for some comedy as Yone & Williams play mind games with one another. Fleisch then goes after Williams as we cut to the widescreen crane camera which missed what move Fleisch hit as I also hear a lot of squeaking. We then get a funny moment here as Yone demands the ref move out of the way of the camera so he can see himself lock Williams in a Neck Crank on the big screen as we’re told that you can win by KO in this match. Top Rope Leg Drop by Yone on Fleisch gets a two as I’ve just noticed that Yone & Morishima at no point have faced off in this match. Storm then hits his Perfect Storm finisher for a two as this ring just got a whole lot more squeakier. Having Morishima miss a Missile Dropkick didn’t help. We’ve finally scrapped tagging one another in as everyone goes after everyone else. Backdrop by Morishima sends Fleisch to the floor onto Williams & Yone. Superkick by Storm on Morishima gets a two. Backdrop Driver by Morishima on Storm gets the win at 16:28 to retain**.** I feel like this could’ve been better if they didn’t have the tag rules and was treated like a Scramble match. In case you’re curious, Morishima would lose the belt the next night at an IPW:UK show to PAC in a 4 Way in Orpington, Kent which also featured Ashley Reed and Kevin Steen

We still have two minutes left so we get music video for this show set "mOBSCENE" by Marilyn Manson

FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, this show was serviceable but it’s not a show I would recommend. This crowd was very quiet throughout the majority of this show as I feel like this show was put on just to kill time before Night 2 of the Know Your Enemy weekend. The only match worth watching here is Burridge vs McGuinness. All the other matches were very skippable. Overall, thumbs down. I have a DVD copy of this show which is how I watched this and the Q&A which is also on the DVD which I’ll cover in a moment. The show is 1 hour 46 minutes 24 seconds long with a combined match length of 1 hour 3 minutes 14 seconds

Q&A TIME!!!
As mentioned at the top of this review, we have a Q&A that was held before this show. Our panelists are Tracy Smothers, The Blue Meanie, Sterling James Keenan, Darren Burridge & Nigel McGuinness… let’s see what was asked

We’re off to a hot start as Tracy Smothers isn’t here as he’s currently on the toilet but we're gonna carry on without him for now

After an awkward wait for our first question and for the mic that Blue Meanie is using to work, Meanie gets asked about his thoughts on the then-upcoming relaunch of ECW that WWE is doing. Meanie says that WWE ECW should be run in small venues similar to how the original ECW did it and similar to the Doncaster Dome

Smothers has finished on the toilet and is now here to answer questions but the next one is for Meanie who gets asked what future upcoming promoters should avoid doing to not end up dead like ECW. Meanie says new upcoming promoters shouldn’t start big and work their way towards that

Smothers then gets asked why he and Steve Armstrong were never signed by WWE in the mid 1980s. Smothers says WWE were interested at the time but says certain people who he didn’t name didn’t want them so he ended up working for WCW and then SMW instead

Everyone then gets asked who they would like as a dream manager
- Smothers picks Sherri Martel, Jim Cornette, Paul Heyman and then later Jimmy Hart
- Darren Burridge also picks Sherri Martel because “she’s quite fit”
- Meanie picks Bobby Heenan
- Nigel McGuinness picks Lord Alfred Hayes
- SJK picks Jim Cornette solely so Cornette can start riots for him "to get me heel heat"

Nigel gets asked which match with Colt Cabana in ROH was his favourite. Nigel says he likes his match at ROH Third Anniversary Celebration Night 2 (I had to look this up as he just said “the one in Dayton”) and also picks their Soccer Riot match they had at ROH Night of the Grudges 2

SJK gets asked about what it was like to be in OVW recently and if WWE ever signed him, would he be worried that he would have to change his gimmick into “something daft”
SJK admits he doesn’t know what the word daft means but thankfully Nigel explains it to him. SJK then says he learnt a ton while at OVW and says he wouldn’t care what WWE gave him if he signed even if they made him wear all pink

Everyone gets asked by a small child who they would want to face in a Hardcore match
- SJK says he hates Hardcore matches so he’ll face any WWE Diva or John Cena which upsets the kid in the John Cena shirt I've mentioned a few times during the show review so SJK changes his answer to that kid
- Nigel picks Shark Boy
- Meanie gets "JBL" heckled at him but doesn’t pick him and instead picks Terry Funk since they never faced off which was true
- Burridge picks Johnny Saint
- Before he picks someone, Tracy Smothers goes into Story Mode and talks about a tag match he had in SMW with Cactus Jack against Boo Bradley (aka Balls Mahoney) & Chris Candido then talks about his match with Terry Funk in 1997 for IWA Mid-South. Smothers then says that his dream Hardcore match would be a 4 Way with him, Cactus Jack, Terry Funk and Chris Candido

SJK & Smothers both get asked if it’s hard to be a heel with a strong gimmick when fans are constantly cheering for you. SJK says he doesn’t know how he feels in this situation then gets interrupted and heckled by Al Snow who says he hates him which makes SJK quip “Al just buried me! There’s no coming back from that” to which Al responds with “No, you’re burying yourself”
Al Snow then says that he’s off to the McDonald’s across the road from The Dome then admits he shoved a £10 note up Meanie’s ass. Both Smothers & Al then admit they need therapy before they have another match with one another

Al Snow then berates the crowd for asking "bad questions" and demands they ask them for life advice. I guess Al Snow is now our host for the time being. A small child then says he loves Meanie so Al claims that child will grow up to have an “acquired taste” later in life. Al then refuses to let them ask a question because they took too long until Smothers demands the child get a chance. The child eventually asks who everyone wouldn’t like to have a match with but Al Snow answers for him saying he wouldn’t wanna wrestle Smothers ever again then leaves to go have his McDonalds

Smothers goes back to the question about being a heel real quickly since he never answered it and says he just dances when he gets cheered then he’ll flip the fans off either with the middle finger or the wedding ring finger. Smothers then compares the 1PW crowds to crowds in ECW as someone has a very squeaky chair

Back on track now as a child asks SJK why he always hangs out with Abyss when he attacks Spud. SJK says he uses Abyss mainly to keep women off him. I'm now picturing Abyss as Hugh Hefner for some reason after hearing that

Meanie then steals the mic to ask why do women always go to the bathroom in pairs while saying “The line would be a lot shorter if you went on your own”. A child then responds by saying “why does it take so long for men to shave then?” which confuses everyone including everyone in the crowd

Smothers gets asked who he considers to be the best heel wrestler he’s every worked with or seen and Smothers picks Chris Candido

SJK gets asked where he gets the inspiration to be a heel and SJK says that being a heel isn’t an act for him and he’s just being himself

Everyone then gets asked what their retirement plans are
- SJK says he would like to meet a “normal girl… if they exist”, get married, have kids and own a gym
- Nigel says he would like to have millions of dollars, travel the world, have kids and play football in front of 20,000 people
- Meanie says he would like to work backstage at shows as an agent or producer
- Burridge says he would like to get into acting and one day hopes he can have a swimming pool in his house
- Smothers says he wants to outlast “Bullet” Bob Armstrong when it comes to retiring then says he too would like to do backstage work but if that doesn’t work then he’d like to try bounty hunting while promoting Heavenly Helpers. The website doesn’t exist anymore but good old Internet Archive is here to help. Smothers then talks about being an outlaw wrestler in the territories back in the day

A female fan asks Burridge & Nigel what advice would they give those who want to get into wrestling in the UK despite there not being a lot of wrestling schools around. This did leave me questioning what wrestling schools we had in the UK around this time. If anyone can help with that, I’d appreciate it
Burridge starts by saying that you need to learn the basics of chain wrestling if you start training as "doing that will keep British Wrestling alive". Nigel echoes what Burridge said and brings up some advice once given to him by William Regal

Smothers gets asked where he learned to dance and if he’s a better dancer than SJK. Smothers says no one taught him to dance and says his dancing is all improvised

The next question gets asked by the kid in the John Cena shirt who asks everyone the who would you not like to wrestle question he tried to say earlier since no one answered it because Al Snow is a dick to children
- Smothers says he would LOVE to knock Vince McMahon’s teeth down his throat for everything he’s done then says he wouldn’t want to wrestle either Stan Hansen or Bruiser Brody. He then says he also wants to knock Bradshaw’s teeth out for what he did to Meanie at ECW One Night Stand last year
- Burridge says he doesn’t want to wrestle arrogant wrestlers who are full of themselves then names Stu Hart as one of those people
- Meanie says he’ll wrestle anyone then brings up his recent health scare. Around this time Meanie had developed an empyema, which is a bacterial infection in which pus gathers in the area between the lungs and inner surface of the chest wall so he had to have one his lungs removed and drained
- Nigel says he can’t pick anyone as he wants a job with a big company
- SJK refuses to answer echoing Nigel's comments and demands one more question

The final final question was gonna be about the WWE Wellness Policy but host Joe Dombrowski demands he change it and “follow Al Snow’s advice”
Instead of joining Al at McDonald’s or following Al’s advice, the final question is about what everyone does when travelling alone
- SJK says he spends his times in strip clubs when he isn’t alone in a hotel room
- Nigel says he thinks of what ribs to play on others and brings up a rib that was pulled on him while John Tenta was working for All Star Wrestling in 2000. According to Nigel, Tenta once put laxatives in his protein shake once after a match and even said Tenta was his roommate once
- Meanie says he plays on his PSP and listens to CDs then brings up his own rib story about how The Lumberjack from Al Snow’s school once ate everyone’s food so Meanie and his friends made him a pie full of laxatives which The Lumberjack ate and, while constipated during a battle royal, everyone took turns giving him Bodyslams then everyone hid the toilet paper from him after the match so he had to use coffee filters to wipe his ass
- Burridge then brings up a rib that was pulled by Jonny Storm when the two were in Ireland for Irish Whip Wrestling as Burridge lost his phone only to find it attached to the ceiling inside a condom
- Smothers ends by telling a rib from 1988 that was pulled by Dick Murdoch & Bob Orton while the three of them in Japan as Murdoch & Orton stole Smothers shoes so he had to walk everywhere in Japan in his wrestling boots

Smothers then talks about how he’s had a hectic week prior to working these 1PW shows this weekend. I decided to take a look at Smothers’ bookings for Mat 2006 and, according to Cagematch, this was his schedule in May 2006

May 3 – Loses to Shane Wlliams for USACW in Nashville, Tennessee
May 10 – Beats Kodiak for USACW in Nashville, Tennessee
May 13 – Loses a NWA Virginia Heavyweight Championship match to Damien Wayne for NWA Virginia in Martinsville, Virginia
May 17 – Loses a tag match with Jason James to The Naturals for USACW in Nashville, Tennessee
May 24 – Wins a tag match with Pothead John against Lonestar & Shawn Shultz for CCW in Evansville, Indiana

May 27 – Loses a Tag Title Tournament Semi Final with Chris Hamrick against Jody Fleisch & Jonny Storm for 1PW in Doncaster, England
May 30 – Loses to Tack at a HWA Adrenaline TV Taping in Cincinnati, Ohio

He’s trying to talk some more as in the distance we hear someone having what sounds like the time of their life. Smothers then goes back to the travelling question and says he travels in the US with a George Foreman grill as well as tins of food and still uses road maps to find the venues he’s working in as well as gyms. And that concludes our Q&A. An interesting listen even if it did get derailed at times

If you’re wondering about the schedule for the others involved in this Q&A, including Al Snow since he was technically apart of this, for May 2006 then here it is... and I only did this because I was curious
