I find the best way to learn about people, places and cultures is reading great literature from the area. I split my time living in Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and Las Vegas. So far I have read and really enjoyed The Death of Artemio Cruz by Carlos Fuentes and Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo. Then I discovered Valeria Luiselli who is ethically Mexican, but did not grow up or current live there; Faces in the Crowd was really good, but not particularly Mexican. Other Latin American authors I like are Mario Vargas Llosa (Feast of the Goat and The Bad Girl) and Leonardo Padura’ Havana Red. I am struggling through Julio Cortázar’s short stories. So I would love to read some great Mexican novels I can buy in English.
