I’m a newly licensed electrical contractor in Florida, 30 years old, and trying to figure out my next move.

I’ve always wanted to work for myself, and I’m confident in my skills as an electrician. The problem is, I don’t have much experience on the business side of things. Right now I’m working a 9–5 that started out as a good opportunity, but it’s gone downhill. The company barely advertises electrical or plumbing services, and work has been extremely slow. This past week, three electricians had to split just six service calls total.

It’s frustrating because there’s no real explanation from management, and it’s pushing me to seriously consider going out on my own. At the same time, I’m used to having a steady routine, so making that jump feels risky.

One of my biggest hang-ups right now is getting started properly. I’ve tried setting up a Google Business profile but I’m having trouble getting verified and don’t fully understand the process. I’m also not sure if running Google Ads is actually what brings in work for new contractors, or if there are better ways to start getting leads.

I don’t have connections with general contractors yet, so I don’t have a steady pipeline of jobs coming in.

For those of you who have been in this position:

- How did you get your first consistent jobs?

- Is Google Ads worth it starting out, or should I focus elsewhere?

- Any advice on getting verified on Google Business?

- How did you build relationships with GCs or other referral sources?

Any advice or insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
