Dystopian novel from the last five-ish years about a trans sex-worker.

This book was NOT erotica, though that's all I get when I try to Google it.

I remember reading a review of the book in a relatively high profile place like The New York Times. There was a picture of the cover, which was predominantly black I think.

The plot was a near future dystopia in which the USA has become (more of) a hellscape for sexual minorities. The main character was transgender dominatrix, though she (they?) also had a secret life smuggling people out of the country so they could seek a safer life in better political environments. The protagonist was named something like Madame X, and her name was also part or all of the title.

I'm pretty sure I read the review about five years ago. It would have been 10 years ago at the most.
