Passing safely vs divebombing

I am relatively new to racing in general and have been playing iracing for a few months now, one of the things I am struggling most with is what constitutes as a fair pass and what would be a dangerous divebomb.

I see plenty of clips and many examples in my own races of people sending it down the inside from 2-3 car lengths back, braking super late and either completely destroying the car who has already turned in for the corner or the car ahead has to take evasive action.

The general consensus in the comment sections seems to be that huge lunges are fine and it's the job of the car in front to avoid turning in on the car.

I was under the impression that as the car ahead, you only have to give space if the car behind manages to get alongside before you start turning in.

Please can someone provide some clarity on what the actual rules regarding this are?

Edit: Thanks for everyones input, gave me some perspective that it doesn't really matter who's right or wrong and that it's better to stay in the race, than to lose your car being "right"
