Christians miss out on other powerful beliefs or philosophies

When I was evangelical, I believed everything outside of evangelicalism was either evil or had little personal benefit. I was not aware of the powerful teachings of Buddhism or the many other great philosophers over the millennia. I very much feel like I was cheated. Also, I was never made aware that some of Jesus teachings were not exactly original teachings.

Are you more compassionate and/or empathetic after deconstruction?

After my painful deconstruction, I feel like I am more loving and compassionate towards others. Much more open minded, forgiving, understanding etc. I also feel more focused on social justice and helping others. Not sure if it is just a desire to find purpose or perhaps it is a result of leaving behind the poison of evangelicalism???

I frequently interact with folks that would be considered progressive Christians or sometimes mainline Christians. I have noticed that even in these groups there is a desire to hold onto obviously mythical Bible stories and spin them in a way that makes them seem useful. They make it seem like that is the way the author intended. Just in the last 24 hours I saw a progressive Christian try to spin the Noah story and the Tower of Babel story into something positive…supposedly.

My thought is that they are trying to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, so to speak.

Just wanted to see what others think about this.

Thanks.
