Need some advice from people faaaar more knowledgeable on the subject than I.
A little context: I, 40F, am at a point in my life where I can buy my first brand new car instead of a used one. Kids are also getting to driving age, and I got a 2017 nissan truck sittin in my yard I plan to give to my son (was my father's), and I have a kia 2019 I plan to give to my daughter as they're both back to back with licenses and is the current car I use.
For me though? Well, it's taken a while, but I'm sitting pretty now financially. got a house within the last 5 years, all my debt from a bad marriage paid off, sitting in a comfortable job where i should be expecting a nice raise here in 2 months, and... life is good o.o
And since I will be in the market here in about 4 months, I decided I wanted to get my dream car. And i know for most people that means "Fast sports car" or whatever, but ever since the 90's, first time i saw a jeep wrangler i thought that was the coolest car I've ever seen. No real logic behind it or anything llike that, completely an emotional decision that I can't justify - but it's just -always- been the car I wanted to own one day.
Thing is: I know nothing about cars. Aircraft - Sure, use to work on c-5's when I was in the military, could tell you a lot about electrical and environmental systems of those suckers, and pick up a wiring diagram and TO manual to fix just about anything. Cars? I can change a tire, oil, and fluids and the most basic stuff like headlights, but that's about it. Specs, life expectation, new systems and what have you: Nah, that's for someone else's career for me to fund. And quite frankly, I'm ok with keeping it that way cuz I'm getting ooooold and tired and enjoying the desk life.
So, here is what we're looking at:
Life is short, I'm getting a jeep wrangler. Call it a bucket list item, sure, but the decision is made.
And I don't know shit about shit about the different wranglers, how 2026 models differ from other models, if i should just wait longer and get a 2027 model or any shit about that. While price isn't an issue, I don't know if there is a big enough jump reliablility wise between a 'sport' and a 'willy's to justify the difference ((willing to do what i got to do if it is, but if it ain't? No point)
I myself don't really do much off roading. Like i said, this is a 'emotional' buy, not a practical one, so it ain't gunna likely be doing trails or anything like that. I do drive from NE texas to omaha nebraska every now and again to see my brother, but thats a once a year- twice a year thing. mostly, it's gunna be on texas flat open road going from a small town to another small town an hour away. We have been gettin some snow and ice now every winter, so thats the only 'practical' use for it - and they don't lay out salt here. (originally from New Jersey where that was extremely common), so it boils down to.
- Sport and Willys - What the hell is the difference?
- Are either good in snow under the assumption I live in the middle of nowhere, and unlikely to get plowed in any immediate fashion? Only one month out of the year, but we do lose power and such so goin somewhere or needing to get out in an emergency a bit of a need here.
- do 2026 models have any really known 'bugs' that I should know about, aka, should I wait for 2027 models to come out to see if there are improvements?
- Not an off roader or anything like that, so it will be unlikely to be worn down, and I do take my cars for maintenance every year.
- drive less than 3K miles a year.
- Under these conditions, what are we looking at to set asside for maintenance every year? Is it expensive to maintain? Dn't plan to do any mods or anything like that.
