I’ve been thinking about how a car can become this tiny private space between different parts of the day.

Sometimes people get home from work and don’t go inside right away. They just sit in the car for a few minutes, finish a song, scroll a little, breathe, or mentally switch from “work mode” to “home mode.” Same thing before an appointment, after errands, or when you arrive somewhere early.

It made me realize that a car isn’t always just transportation. Sometimes it’s a little pause before the next version of yourself has to show up.

For me, scent is a big part of that feeling. A clean or comforting smell can make the car feel more like “my space” instead of just a vehicle. Not necessarily anything strong — just something soft, cozy, or familiar enough to shift the mood.

Do you ever use your car this way?

And if so, what kind of scent would make that little reset moment feel better: clean, warm, vanilla, coffee, fruity, floral, woody, gourmand, or no scent at all?

Yesterday I went perfume shopping and tried Twilly d’Hermès.

The moment I smelled the opening, my brain immediately went:

“Wait… this smells like LiuShen Florida Water.”

For people who don’t know, LiuShen / 六神花露水 is a very iconic Chinese floral-herbal cooling water. It smells green, medicinal, floral, slightly minty, and extremely nostalgic if you grew up around Chinese households.

Twilly obviously smells more refined and expensive. It has that spicy ginger, white floral, creamy sandalwood thing going on. But the opening had this clean, spicy, slightly powdery herbal-floral feeling that sent me straight into Chinese summer childhood memory mode.

It was like Hermès discovered some mysterious Eastern household magic, put a silk scarf on it, and turned it into a perfume.

Not a complaint at all. Honestly, it made me laugh and also made me like Twilly more.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or is my nose just permanently programmed by 六神花露水?
