So what does it mean for a character to be well written ?

So what does it mean for a character to be well written ?

So i am new to the sub, and I will admit i haven't read as many books or seen many movies/series as you guys.

But my question is what does it mean for a character to be well written ?

Is it backstory , in a sense that a character's past that explains his/her current behaviours and motives ?

His/her own thoughts if they are portrayed

For example from AoT Reiner is probably my favourite character, and I think the author built his character beautifully, his childhood, his struggle with his identity, grief, etc.

And i think his character was very well written which is probably thought by many of you too.

Similarly is Yuko Kuruse from Boy's abyss a good written character ?

I know the series is criticised for being too long and a bad ending, but in my opinion her character was made very well, her relationship with Esemiro, how she was basically tortured and abused throughout her childhood, and what made her behave the way she does later on .

Contrary to that ,Nagi's character from the same manga , I thought her reveal was too rushed towards the ending.
