5 year old, Bichon.

About a month ago my dog started scratching at his paws. It went on for about a week and a half before I took him to the vet, where they gave us an antiseptic/antimicrobial topical wash, and a cytopoint shot, and advised it was most likely allergies. For context, he’s never had allergies before, but I thought maybe they could be bad this year?

Then about 2 weeks later, his nose started to run, and he sounded congested. It was both nostrils, clear mucus. There’s a spot on the side of his nose that the vet thinks is from trauma (him scratching it)

It’s also a bit lighter than the rest of his black nose. His breathing was loud, especially at night, and sounded like a pug almost.

I took him in and was prescribed antibiotics but this did not resolve the issue. So he got a rhinoscopy and we’re waiting on the results. I did not speak to the vet at pick up and wasn’t told what exactly they found/were testing for so would also be grateful for any more information on this procedure (calling Monday to ask for more).

Does anyone know what the realm of issues are that could be causing this?

Tldr: 5 year old bichon, no previous allergies. First paw biting, then nasal issues (clear mucus, runny, breathing sounding like pug - worse at night) not responsive to antibiotics or steroids.

Thank you <3

I’ve had my sweet boy, Leo, for about 4 and a half year. He’s now 5 years old, and has always been healthy (aside from being naughty and a few emergency trips to the vet for eating things he wasn’t supposed to).

Posting this to see if anyone else has similar issues or knows what it could be? I’m trying not to spiral while waiting for results but this is nerve wracking.

Tldr: has your bichon had nasal issues before? And/or had a rhinoscopy performed? Or have they developed allergies suddenly? Thank you <3
