Looking for a quiet, clean experience in Shimla
I will be in Shimla city on May 13. The last time I was there in December 2025, the city was extremely crowded and noisy, vehicles everywhere, not a moment to think.
So I took a bus towards Craignano park, which took me over an hour to reach from IGMC bus stand. There I took a walk around the trail, going around the mountain, next to the park and I came out on the other side of the mountain, where the road went back down to Shimla. I loved my walk in the nature as it was quiet and away from traffic. I ran into all of two people in the trail, who were residents of a village ahead.
In fact, I am pretty sure I heard a wild animal hunting another smaller animal. I heard them rushing in the woods above me and the hunted animal yelping in pain. It was equally frightening and thrilling to experience this in what I felt was the wilderness, but it turned out to be a daily path for the villagers.
So, now when I return to Shimla, I am looking for another quiet experience of the city. I am a walker, I love to explore on foot, savouring every new sight, even the trees, the rustling leaves, the change in air that comes from a different city.
I can walk 25,000 steps a day, even in mountains, the slow exploration gives me immense satisfaction.
I am considering taking the walk in the Shimla water catchment sanctuary post noon, and then head towards Advanced Studies and enjoy the colonial architecture from a bench until evening. Then I can maybe go to Mall Road for dinner.
Will that give me the quiet experience I am looking for, or would you suggest something else.
Honestly, I ventured into the Craignano trail on a spur, not knowing what's ahead, the sun streamed through the tall, formidable trees, the air was crisp, the wilderness was enchanting. It was just nature and me.
So I dont mind exploring more of such quaint areas around Shimla. I have a car.
Thank you for any inputs.
