My first set of Fire-Poi - What setup fits best
Hey everyone,
I’ve been spinning poi for quite a while now and would consider myself fairly advanced in terms of both technique and flow. I’m currently looking into getting my first serious fire poi setup, but I’m still a bit unsure which direction would fit my style best.
My style is very hybrid-oriented and combines both flow and technical patterns. A lot of what I do includes:
* flowy weaves & transitions
* body tracing
* a lot of wraps
* stalls
* flowers & wheelplane flowers
* antispin patterns
* wallplane work
* pendulums
* hybrids
* caps
* simple to medium throws
* fountains
* meteor variations
So I’m not really looking for a pure “slow flow” setup, but also not an ultra-light pure tech setup either. What’s most important to me is:
* enough precision for antispin, hybrids, snakes, etc.
* but still enough momentum and a bit of drag for flow, stalls, and body tracing
* good control for meteor / throws
What I’ve figured out so far:
* I definitely want Technora leashes (i use wraps quite frequently)
* I’d also like UltraKnob LED Pro knobs (for the throws and general look)
* head size will probably be around 3.3"–3.5" (roughly 8–9 cm diameter) for a nice burntime
* medium weight overall, nothing extremely heavy
* probably medium length
Right now I’m roughly considering three directions:
- Light Cathedral / Block Heads: More flowy, nicer stalls, more “floaty” feeling, but maybe slightly too sluggish for antispin, snakes, and one-hand stuff.
- Nova Heads: At the moment this seems like the best middle ground to me: enough stability and momentum while still staying technical enough for flowers, hybrids, and meteor/fountain work.
- Compact Monkey Fists: Probably the most precise option and best for one-hand, throws, and fast direction changes, but maybe slightly less satisfying for stalls and flow.
What would you recommend for a style like this?
Which head shapes or specific fire poi setups have worked well for you for similar hybrid styles?

* one-hand / meteor-style variations with two poi in one hand

Right now I’m roughly considering three directions:

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice or experiences — I’m really curious to hear your thoughts and see what you’d recommend 😄
May the flow be with you.
