Hi everyone! I'm a mosaic workshop instructor based in Amsterdam, NL, teaching small (10 people) and large (up to 50) groups at their own venues. We do hands-on sessions where participants grout their mosaics on-site, but mixing the grout (voegmiddel) fresh during the workshop is a huge time suck and it interrupts the flow and I don't always have time or an assistant to handle it.
Pre-mixing isn't an option either, as I read it starts setting too quickly and can't be stored overnight in a sealed bucket without special tricks (like submerging under water, which isn't practical for travel/portability). I usually bring dry powder and mix small batches on the spot with a drill mixer, but with larger groups, this means constant pausing to remix while everyone's waiting.
Looking for practical advice from fellow instructors or pros:
- What's the best way to handle grout prep for group workshops without an assistant.
- Any pre-made, ready-to-use grout products that stay workable longer (non-toxic, suitable for beginners)?
- Hacks for quick mixing (e.g., portable setups, batch sizes for 10-20 people)?
- Travel-friendly storage solutions if pre-mixing is doable somehow?
- Or should I switch to a different adhesive method altogether for workshops?
