Starting MNR at Auburn

I got into the Master’s of Natural Resources program at Auburn this spring and I’ll start the summer practicum next week. I have a BS in biology, and I taught high school science for a while, but teenagers weren’t for me.

The MNR is the professional forester track, but I’m also interested in research, possibly continuing in academia after the degree. I’m thinking research in longleaf forest conservation.

Two questions:
1- Has anyone navigated the jump from an MNR or similar professional master’s to a research PhD? Did the professional degree help or hurt your application, and is there anything you’d do differently?

2-If you were starting an MNR today with academic ambitions, what would you do differently in the first year to set yourself up?”

Thanks all. I’m excited to start on this new career path.

All personal finds (minus 2 which were given to me). All from Chilton County, AL on family land or private land on which I was generously granted permission to hunt. Points, Scrapers, and Blades. Almost all intact. There is a lot of hours in this frame. I’m so excited to be able to see it all displayed nicely.

It’s broken, but still readable. Central AL. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m pretty sure it’s old.

It has taken me a while to get this far. Lots of stops and starts with other books in between. This might be the strangest novel I’ve ever read. It took some time to get used to the characters breaking into song and dance…oh and the pedophilia, coprophagia, and racism. Also, I don’t speak a lick of German and there was a lot I just didn’t feel compelled to translate. I splurged and got the hardback. Once I’m done, it will sit pretty on my shelf like a hard-earned trophy. Cheers, all.

I just got back from a sod farm hunt after a rain, and I found 5 of these little beauties. What a day!
