With increased startup culture and expansion in terms of the array of specialisations within marketing, is it safe to say that a strong generalist with range is becoming more and more necessary at top levels?

What drove me to ask is a conversation with a friend from the industry, xOgilvy xWPP, about how the only way they're currently ensuring a solid internal promotion pipeline + improved departmental efficiency is by making the GTM guy talk to the product guy, the Brand guy talking to sales, and so on with the goal of making a web of connections to prevent siloed work.

What piqued my curiosity was that if this is the way forward, wouldn't it be preferred to have a generalist on top of all this?

Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
