I watched almost all the Star Beast without realizing Rose was Trans. I didn't understand the "David" stuff and only got it at the end when she used enby powers or something

Does this make me an Ally or the opposite.

Hi. I teach 9th grade science. I went on a field trip to the OKC bombing memorial and a student pushed back against me because we "don't care that it happens all over the world every day. Why is the OKC bombingany different?". Thing is I AGREE with his sentiment but feel so trained not to "indoctrinate" kids. I just awkwardly gave neutral statements like "people don't think it can happen here sometimes". I talked with a coworker about it and I think a text I sent sums up my issue well

"I just feel like I can't authentically show my values in our school system sometimes

In situations like that I feel like I'm actively working against them"

Especially as a science teacher, I feel like my job is to quiet discussions on morality and human decency because as my conservative uncle says "why would you talk about that in a science class?"

I want to encourage critical thought, but I feel like I work in a system designed to shit it down.

What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Edit: Ok after seeing responses, I need to clarify some things.

I think the general consensus is to always answer with questions and work on my rhetorical skills. Thank you

The student did not say he didn't care. He was frustrated by hypocrisy.

I don't hate America. I want it to be better

I don't want to indoctrinate kids. My issue is that the way I am forced to act feels like indoctrination via omission. The world is on fire right now and any discussion on how to fix it veers into political territory. I struggle with that

I am a sensitive dude, so please no more insults or insuations about my character. I apologize for any impassioned language I used in the comments. I care deeply about this and I think that is why the student comment stung.
