Investing/saving as a child’s birthday present.

Some background on the title - my son turns one this month. In addition to the normal gifts & toys he’ll be receiving, I’d also be interested in putting a few quid aside into some kind of investment to be given to him when he’s 18/21. Perhaps monthly too-ups with a lump sum for his birthday.

I know there’s people that buy an expensive bottle of whiskey, gold or a first edition book or something, but ideally I’d like to put money into something that can reliably appreciate in value. I’ve seen the stories of people doing it with whiskey and ending up with a collection worth 30-40k but that seems to be as much about knowledge of what edition/brand you’re getting as anything else.

Am I best off just looking at a standard savings account, or is there something else parents on here could recommend?
