I wanted to come on and actually defend the bold direction they went with for season 3. I think the dulling of saturation for the cast makes a lot of sense because the characters are miserable this season. A lot of them won't outright say it but they are. Rue is a drug mule at the start, Lexi is an assistant looking for validation from her boss, Cassie and Nate are in a loveless marriage and in debt, Jules is the other woman and her life has become so monotone like her house, and Maddy who should be fine given everything is looking up for her is still stuck in a relentless cycle of focusing on herself and other people in a way that's not healthy for her. Maddy "doesn't wanna work" in season 1 VRS. Maddy "gets paid for nothing and still wants another job" in season 3 shows her having nothing outside of work. Each of the main characters palettes are diluted because they aren't optimistic, happy, or excited anymore.
