My grandma told her neighbour that I’m "vegen" or "vegoon" or something like that (probably wanted to complain about it) and the neighbour offered to share some apparently vegan recipes she used to cook for her grandchildren. Today I met her while she was working in her garden so I asked about the recipes and it turned out they were vegetarian, not vegan. So I told her it’s very nice of her but I’m vegan and couldn’t use the recipes.
It was immediately obvious she had an issue with it. She said that everyone should eat a little bit of everything and that she would spank me for being vegan. She also called vegan food slop and other unappetising terms. Then she started telling me how little meat she eats for some reason which seemed funny to me when I just got threatened with violence for not eating animal products.
I laughed about it but now I regret I didn’t push back at her more. It’s not like I cause her any harm by not eating certain foods and I think she shouldn’t feel entitled to express her desire to hit me for it. She used to be a teacher too and I can’t imagine what the poor kids she taught had go through.
