I was cleaning an old Tascam 16track machine at work yesterday and it reminded me of this conversation I had with an old timey engineer some years back.
He was showing me this old d&r mixer he used for recording / mixing hooked up to a DAW with 16 tracks. I asked why he kept it at 16 given the desk had 24 channels.
Then he pointed to this stack of A4s on his desk. Basically photocopies of the same grid with 16 spaces with the title "Tape - Channel List" on top. He said he has been photocopying the same sheets for years.
"There is only space for 16 tracks, more doesn't fit on the sheet ! So I just do everything with 16 tracks."
Had a really good laught at that.
