I'm finally getting to the point where I need to (and can afford) to buy ships to do a thing without customization.
However, most of my play so far has been micromanaging fleets with free ships, story mission rewards, and so on. So my rule is that I name a ship if I customize it, or if it's significant in some way.
I absolutely love sentence-length ship names like, for example, Scalzi's 'Yes Sir, That's My Baby' in the Interdependency. My rule is is that it has to be easy to refer to in the last part, like so.
For example, the story mission Moreya (the Litigious Rodent) is the 'Hedgepig.'
My first captured Xenon ship is the 'Dead Channel', My Odysseus is the 'Responsibility', so on, so forth.
What things have you guys used for ship naming? Props for advice once ships start getting into the dozens, rather than the dozen.
Edit: Side note for those who haven't run into it, Velvet Thunder is the dev's name, but it stays.
