TN Visa denied due to “remote work” — has anyone successfully navigated this?

Hi all — looking for some advice or similar experiences.

I recently applied for a TN visa at YYZ. The officer didn’t question my qualifications or the role itself, but ultimately denied my application because they felt the position didn’t clearly require me to be physically in the U.S. — it was interpreted as too “remote.”

For context:

  • I work for a U.S.-based company with a U.S. team
  • My role involves regular collaboration with that team
  • I do travel for in-person meetings a few times a year

The feedback I got was basically: the letter didn’t prove that my job needs me to be in the U.S.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone had success getting a TN approved with a mostly remote role?
  2. How did you demonstrate that the role required a U.S. presence?
  3. Are there specific phrases or types of evidence that helped your case?
  4. Is it worth reapplying at a port of entry vs. going through USCIS?

Would really appreciate any insight.

Thanks in advance 🙏

Any experiences with TN Visa at YTZ?

I am applying for a TN visa as a Canadian citizen. I am based in Toronto and planning on going through either YYZ or YTZ (the preclearance opened up recently) to apply for my TN visa. I have heard a couple of stories from both points of entry, but looking to hear any recent experiences from either POE - thank you!
