Is this a workable pavillion?

Hello, I saw a photo online of kind of a rustic A frame pavilion and really like the look and feel of it, maybe you have seen it already, and I want to try and copy it, or at least get close, but I am not sure it is even a workable, stable design?  I live in Minnesota so snowfall and frost heaving is a concern, and it would be out in the woods far from any other structure.

For example the base frame looks like the wood is on it's side instead of on it's edge, not sure why someone would do that?  Also the round wooden posts, I wonder how they are fastened to the base?  And finally does this whole thing look stable?   It looks to me to be about 12 foot wide by 10 foot deep, but hard to tell, might be smaller like 10X8?  Anyway any thoughts anyone has on how to get started on this would be appreciated, or how to make it better (for example replacing the log supports with regular framing lumber, or using a more traditional floating deck as a base) or reasons to skip it and start from scratch on a different design. My carpentry skills are probably intermediate at best.
