I want to pursue a PhD in business (marketing background) abroad but have no idea where to start, need guidance
Hi everyone,
I’m really confused and could use some honest guidance from people who’ve been through this or are currently in the process.
I have a BBA-PGDM in Marketing and about 4 years of teaching experience. Lately, I’ve been seriously considering pursuing a PhD in the business field from abroad, but I honestly have no idea where to begin.
Here are the main things I’m struggling with:
Which specialization in business is considered relatively less stressful (if that’s even a thing)?
Which countries are better for a business PhD (in terms of quality + opportunities)?
What kind of financial stability can I expect during and after the PhD?
Is doing a PhD in business actually worth it in the long run, especially compared to industry experience?
How competitive is it to get into good programs?
I’m particularly interested in marketing, but I’m open to exploring related areas if they offer better work-life balance or career prospects.
From what I’ve seen online, opinions are very mixed. Some people say a business PhD is great if you want to go into academia, while others say it’s not worth the time unless you’re 100% sure about research.
Also, I’ve come across people mentioning that PhDs in general can be mentally exhausting due to uncertainty, lack of structure, and constant pressure to publish, which honestly makes me a bit hesitant.
I’d really appreciate any advice on:
How to start preparing (research experience, exams, etc.)
How to shortlist countries/universities
Whether my profile (PGDM + teaching experience) is a good fit
Any insights, personal experiences, or even reality checks would mean a lot.
Thanks in advance! 🙏
