I get it now…

Being out here really just takes the weight of the world off your shoulders and the brain quiets. It’s been about 15 years since I’ve hunted and I’m loving every minute of it.

Hung up gobblers

I finally tracked down the gobblers I’ve been watching the last few weeks. Managed to get within 150y this morning and got their attention with the pot call, but they were already henned up and weren’t budging much. I got them to about 100y before they walked back into the woods from the field. I’m hoping to hit that field again tomorrow and hunker down, but I was curious if any of you fine folks have and tricks for getting those stubborn birds to move?

Rain rain go away

Been a bust of a weekend for me and my boy, lots of rain, but we’re still keeping our fingers crossed. 🤞🏻

Tomorrow’s the day!

Well after waiting, and waiting, and waiting for season open and work to let their grip off me, I’m finally getting out with my son for our first hunt tomorrow.

I am slightly worried that my time has passed however. The group of Tom’s I had been following on the land I was allowed to hunt on have dried up. I went out last night trying to roost some turkeys and managed to find 3 hens roosting but not a single gobbler in my 2 mile trek.

I know this is a breeding ground for them. I know part of this flock has been in this same spot for years. So I know there’s birds here. I’m just hoping all the toms didn’t float with the wind and moved to neighboring properties.

I’ll obviously still be going out all weekend, but my initial excitement has been overshadowed by the thought we may not see a damn thing.

I know it is what it is and it’s how hunting goes, but hoping someone with a longer history and more experience in turkey hunting to give me a little slice of hope to hold on to.

At the end of the day, spending one on one with my son isn’t ever a loss, but I really would love to share the victory of a bird with him, fingers crossed.

This is my new budget turkey gun. I love mossy oak bottomland so I made a similar type of rendition. Didn’t come out exactly how it did in my head, but I’m pretty pleased with it.

Also, in case anyone else wants to try I’ll include links to what I used.

This is the stencil kit I used.

This is the vinyl I traced on and cut out.

This is the precision hobby knife I used to cut out the designs.

And I used Rust-Oleum flat camo paint in the following order.

-grey primer
Layer one: Flat Dark Earth (stripes)
Layer two: Khaki brown
Layer three/four: for this I went with a two tone approach and did the bottom half of the body in “Army Green” and the top half darker with “Deep Forest Green”

Hope this helps if anyone else is curious!

So this weekend will be my first day out with my boy, but nonstop rain in the forecast for the next week and a half. I refuse to be a couch potato if it’s not pouring out and I personally can handle being wet for extended periods, but I want to make sure my 8 year old isn’t getting soaked and cold forcing a premature end to the hunt.

With that said I also don’t want to add more noise like say his rain jacket would make, or a waterproof wind breaker. Do you folks have any suggestions for helping alleviate wet while staying quiet?

Many thanks!

Locked and loaded and ready for season to open Friday.

Mav 88 in 12g, 28” barrel, with truglow gobble stopper and AT3 red dot mounted on a monstrum pic rail / shell holder. (the budget special build).

Ammo of choice Longbeard XR 1-3/4oz 5 shot

First pic is 20y and second 30y, been to long shooting a shotgun that I’m not even going to try further for humane reasons.

Forgot just how much a 12 kicks, fun guns though, a nice switch up from my ARs.
