According to Inside Higher Ed, as the spring semester winds down, soon-to-be graduates from the 40 countries and territories on the Trump administration’s travel ban list may lose their chance to work in the U.S. because some OPT applications are being paused or left unprocessed.

For F-1 students from the impacted countries, the current OPT pause/restriction is a huge problem because many people can’t start working without the EAD.

One thing worth noting: even if OPT is blocked or delayed, CPT may still be possible if you enroll in an eligible program and the job is directly related to your field of study. CPT is authorized by the school/DSO and shown on the I-20, so it is a different process from OPT EAD approval.

If you already have a job or need to continue working legally, you may want to look into Day 1 CPT as a backup option. Has anyone from the impacted countries tried CPT or Day 1 CPT as an alternative while their OPT was delayed or paused? Would be helpful if you could share your experience.

Choosing a Day-1 CPT program is not just about finding the cheapest school or the fastest CPT start date.

A better question is:
Can this program be reasonably explained, properly documented, and connected to my academic and career path?

This thread is a practical guide for comparing Day-1 CPT programs in a risk-aware way.

1. Start With Accreditation

Before looking at tuition, location, or class format, check whether the school is properly accredited.

For most students, regional accreditation is an important baseline when evaluating a U.S. institution.

For Day-1 CPT planning, students start by checking whether the school is accredited by one of the historically regional institutional accreditors:

  • HLC — Higher Learning Commission
  • MSCHE — Middle States Commission on Higher Education
  • NECHE — New England Commission of Higher Education
  • NWCCU — Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
  • SACSCOC — Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
  • WSCUC — WASC Senior College and University Commission

Accreditation alone does not make a Day-1 CPT program “safe,” but unclear or weak accreditation should be treated as a major red flag.

Accreditation issues may not cause problems immediately, but they can become important later during OPT, STEM OPT, H-1B, visa stamping, or other immigration-related reviews.

2. Check Program-Job Relevance

CPT stands for Curricular Practical Training. That means your work should be directly related to your academic program.

Before choosing a program, ask yourself:

  • Does my job connect clearly to this degree?
  • Can I explain how my coursework supports my work?
  • Would this program look academically reasonable based on my prior degree?
  • Am I repeating the same degree without a strong reason?
  • Can my employer’s job description support the connection?

For example, if your job is in data analytics, business analytics, information systems, project management, or engineering management may make more sense than a random unrelated program.

The goal is not just to “get CPT.” The goal is to build a clear academic and career logic.

3. Plan the Timeline Early

Day-1 CPT is time-sensitive.

You may need time for:

  • School application
  • Admission review
  • SEVIS transfer
  • New I-20 issuance
  • CPT authorization
  • Employer paperwork
  • Possible unpaid leave planning

Do not wait until the last week of OPT or STEM OPT to start comparing schools. A late decision can create a work gap even if the school itself is legitimate.

If your current work authorization is expiring soon, timeline may matter more than tuition or location.

4. Do Not Choose Based on Tuition Alone

Lower tuition can be helpful, but cheap does not always mean better. Higher tuition also does not automatically mean safer.

A better order of priority is:

  • Accreditation and school legitimacy
  • Program-job relevance
  • Timeline fit
  • Location& Attendance format and whether you can realistically attend required onsite sessions
  • Total cost
  • Documentation support, including I-20, CPT authorization, enrollment records, course information, attendance records, and payment records

Tuition should be an optimization factor, not the only decision factor.

❓Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Program

Use this checklist before making a decision:

  • Is the school properly accredited?
  • Is the program related to my job?
  • Does this degree make sense after my prior education?
  • When can CPT start?
  • How long does admission and SEVIS transfer take?
  • How often is onsite attendance required?
  • What happens if I miss an onsite session?
  • What is the total tuition?
  • What documents can the school provide?
  • Can my employer support the CPT paperwork?

💡Final Thought

There is no single “best” Day-1 CPT school for everyone.

The right program depends on your status timeline, prior degree, current job, location, budget, employer flexibility, and risk profile.

Choose a program that is not only convenient, but also explainable, documented, and academically reasonable.

If you are unsure, share your background using the community template so others can help you compare your options more clearly.

Welcome to r/day1cpt !

This is a transparent, student-first community for Day-1 CPT school comparison, application planning, and risk-aware decision making.

Our goal is to help students ask better questions, compare programs more carefully, and avoid misleading or overly promotional advice.

💡What This Community Is For

You are welcome to ask about:
- Day-1 CPT school comparison
- CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT timelines
- H-1B backup planning
- School transfer timing
- Program-job relevance
- Tuition, scholarships, and total cost
- Workload and attendance requirements
- RFE concerns
- Travel and re-entry questions
- Student experiences with specific schools
- MBA, MS, DBA, PhD, and second master’s options

There is no single “best” school for everyone. A good Day-1 CPT choice depends on your timeline, academic history, job, location, budget, and risk profile.

💡Risk-Aware Reminders

Day-1 CPT can be a useful option for many students, but it should be planned carefully.

Before choosing a program, compare:

  • CPT start timing
  • Program-job relevance
  • Attendance format
  • Tuition and total cost
  • Workload
  • DSO responsiveness
  • School location
  • STEM eligibility
  • Degree level and academic progression
  • Documentation support

Be careful with claims like:

  • “Guaranteed approval”
  • “No RFE risk”
  • “Safest school”
  • “Easy CPT”
  • “No need to worry”

No school, consultant, or agency can guarantee immigration outcomes.

This subreddit is for general discussion and shared experience. It is not a substitute for legal advice. If your case involves RFE, visa stamping, prior status issues, pending I-485, or other complex immigration matters, consider speaking with a licensed immigration attorney.

💡Transparency & Disclosure Policy

Students, applicants, alumni, school representatives, education consultants, immigration attorneys, and employers are welcome here.

However, transparency is required.

If you are a consultant, school representative, agency, affiliate, referral partner, or anyone with a commercial relationship, please disclose your affiliation clearly in your user flair or comment.

The following may be removed:

  • Undisclosed promotion
  • Fake student reviews
  • WhatsApp or Telegram spam
  • Guaranteed outcome claims
  • Comments pretending to be from a student when they are not

Professionals are welcome when they contribute useful public information. Hidden promotion is not.

We work with international students navigating Day-1 CPT options, and one of the most common concerns we hear is:

“Will choosing certain Day-1 CPT schools increase my risk of RFE?”

Based on what we’ve seen across real cases, the answer is more nuanced than many people think.

A compliant, properly accredited Day-1 CPT school does NOT automatically trigger an RFE.

USCIS typically looks at whether a student is maintaining valid F-1 status through:

- consistent class attendance

- real academic engagement

- proper use of CPT (must be related to the major)

Where we do see higher RFE risk is usually tied to factors like:

- schools without strong accreditation (especially no regional accreditation)

- programs with minimal academic requirements

- students not attending classes or completing coursework

- CPT being used in ways that are not clearly tied to the curriculum

In other words, it’s rarely about “Day-1 CPT” itself — it’s about compliance and how the program is structured and used.

We recently put together a breakdown of:

- what RFE actually means

- when it typically happens

- the most common reasons Day-1 CPT students get RFE

- and how to reduce risk

Happy to answer general questions here as well — we see this confusion come up a lot.
