Is it just me or is this a pattern with us? I spend time in the bathroom first and frequently look down at my phone and wonder if that contributes in some way but I do this at other times of day and no facial flushing happens. Is there a circadian rhythm things with this? Anyone else notice this?
As a beginner I have been practicing in my little watercolor books and small 3"x3" block of paper so far. I have bigger, nicer paper like the 10"x14" Arches block and an even bigger Fabriano block, but haven't had the courage to try anything bigger than small sized paintings so far.
How do I push myself to try the bigger paper without fear and without dividing it up into smaller sections or cutting it up? I want to see how my skills turn out and develop on a bigger area using bigger brush strokes and bigger washes. I don't think I am ready but I never will be if I don't try. I need help getting motivated.
I have gotten as far as opening up the Arches block and removing the top cover of black paper so far. How do you all approach graduating to a bigger painting size? How did it go? Tips? Advice? Motivation?
The Lion is what my husband and I like to hide for one another to find, for fun. Fishy is my husband's cheap decorative figurine to cover an old crack in the toilet tank from our old house. I decided to paint these buddies of ours. Reference photos at the end.
I am a watercolor beginner since January, so have lots to learn and need more patience with drying layers for sure.
What else can I do better besides practice?
I was inspired to go back to basics and learn some watercolor lessons from a book, so I went to my local library to see what they had. There were a few books, plus this one focused on developing realism style drawing skills. These are the very first two exercises in the book to get started. I tried them today. The book advises using colored pencils and/or watercolor paints but I just used pencil.
How did I do?
I do see all the little imperfections but I think there's some potential here. And yes, I used lined paper as my first model but didn't draw the lines. Maybe next time. LOL. The book focuses on the outline, creases, and shadows so that's what I decided to do.
