A reported assault escalated into a deadly incident in the city’s Woodlands area on Wednesday, Calgary police say.

Officers say they responded to reports of a serious assault at the 2100 block of Woodview Drive SW at around 5:40 a.m.

They say the victim was believed to have been injured during the assault and later died of their injuries.

Investigators believe the incident wasn’t random.

Calgary police say Woodview Drive between Woodhill Court and Woodpark Boulevard should open before noon.

Emergency crews are responding to a suspected drowning incident in Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park on Saturday.

In a social media post at around 11 a.m., Parks Canada say the reports of the drowning incident happened at the Lower Falls at Johnston Canyon Trail.

RCMP say the report came in at around 6:45 p.m. Friday, saying it’s believed someone jumped into the rapids and never resurfaced.

Mounties are leading the investigation, while park rangers are leading the recovery efforts.

“Parks Canada extends sincere condolences to the individual’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the post reads. “Out of respect for the individual involved and their family, Parks Canada will not share further details at this time.”

As a result, the Johnston Canyon Trail and Day-Use Area are currently closed.

Members of the public are being asked to stay away from the area to ensure public safety and to allow emergency responders to carry out their work.

More updates are expected once the area reopens.
