We’re reclaiming our youngest’s old bedroom that turned into his storage unit after he moved out. Behind a dresser we found an outlet that isn’t attached inside the outlet box. It’s just an outlet with a cover plate screwed to the front and pushed back into the box without the screws at the top and bottom that hold it in the outlet box. They are missing. It’s probably been like this since before we bought the house and we never noticed it. I got the appropriate screws to attach it, same size, length and screw pitch as what comes on a new outlet but the screws wouldn’t catch in the holes. The holes are stripped out. It’s one of those fiberglass outlet boxes nailed to the stud behind the drywall. Well, I can fix that. I got a toothpick, broke it in half and covered the halves in wood glue to stick in the holes to give the screws something to grab. The bottom hole worked fine but the toothpick went less than a half inch into the top hole. There’s a screw broken off inside there. How do I fix this without cutting a big hole in the drywall to replace the whole junction box?
