Could formal hats ever work within techwear style?
I have actually been thinking about this style question recently. I realized most techwear outfits focus heavily on function, technical fabrics, and minimalistic silhouettes, and because of that, the headwear you typically see in techwear tends to be things like caps, hoods, or beanies.
But it made me wonder subsequently whether formal hats could ever work within a techwear inspired outfit if they were designed with the right materials and aesthetics. For instance, imagine a structured brimmed hat made from modern synthetic materials instead of traditional felt. If the color scheme stayed within the typical techwear palette- black, grey, muted tones…it might blend surprisingly well with technical jackets and cargo silhouettes actually.
Why I started thinking about this was because I was looking at how clothing components are produced across different apparel categories. I was reading through some design resources about garment construction, and I noticed that hat components sometimes appear alongside other clothing materials in manufacturing listings. I also explored a few textile sourcing directories and saw various hat inserts, structural bands and synthetic materials that could be used to build hats with more modern characteristics…some even appeared on alibaba, where factories display materials used in both fashion and functional apparel.
Looking at that overlap, I wonder if formal hats could subsequently evolve using more technical fabrics and lightweight construction methods. So for those people who are into techwear aesthetics, do you think formal hats could realistically fit into a techwear outfit if the materials and design were adapted to match the functional look? Or would they always feel out of place if compared to the more common techwear headwear styles? I would like to hear opinions if this kind of hybrid style could work.
