I'm learning mixed voice right now and trying to strengthen it. After I do my vocal exercises, I apply them to songs. But when doing so, my tone and resonance while singing the words sound dull. Is it normal because I'm learning a new technique, or am I doing something wrong?

What I mean is when applying vocal training(scales and all that for whatever I'm trying to work on) to songs, Should I pick one song, work through it line by line with what I'm trying to master, should I keep trying to improve with that song for vocal growth or should I switch songs so my voice can be challenged my new melodies and words etc.

P.S if this does not make sense just let me know I'll try my best to elaborate haha
