I’m looking at buying a ground floor unit in a two story 1970s apartment block and there’s a bit of a bin situation I’m trying to get my head around. The apartment is end of block closest to the street and goes back away from the street - there are 50 apartments in the block.
The building has a brick/fenced bin pen, but it was clearly designed before the newer 4-bin system. Because of that, not all the bins fit inside anymore.
Right now:
The red/green bins are inside the bin pen
But there are two rows of yellow recycling bins + 4 glass bins sitting outside
These are basically right near my ground floor balcony (closest unit to the street) ~ 2m from
So instead of everything being contained, there are ~12 bins just out in the open directly in front of and around the apartment.
The tricky part is:
Moving them elsewhere would mean moving them further away from the kerb
Which I assume is why they’ve been left there (easier for collection)
Concerns are pretty obvious:
Smell
Pests
Noise (especially collection days)
General look/feel being right outside the unit
Has anyone dealt with something similar in an older block?
Specifically:
Did your strata/OC relocate or redesign the bin area?
Is expanding the bin enclosure something that actually gets approved?
Or do these situations usually just… stay as-is?
Would really appreciate any experiences before I decide whether this is a dealbreaker or something fixable.
