34M - Kiwisaver switch to Sharesies Self-select scheme?

Hi all,

I'm 34M, been overseas for the last 4 years, so have not really contributed to Kiwisaver besides random deposits, and it is currently sitting around 80k. My plan is to use the funds for a house deposit in 2 years time when I move back to NZ.

I moved my Kiwisaver from Westpac to Investnow around 6 months ago, and put 100% into the Foundation Series Total World Fund. In the 6 months it has increased by 6%.

I am looking to switch to the Sharesies self select scheme, and with the options below.

I was wondering if anyone else had switched to this option and if so how are they doing, and if you have not switched then why? Additionally thoughts on my picks?

50% base fund Sharesies US500 Fund (Vanguard S&P 500 ETF)

5% each into

1 - AMZN

2 - TSLA

3 - PLTR

4 - META

5 - RKLB

6 - COIN (crypto)

7 - SOFI

8- IBIT (crypto, bitcoin trust etf)

9- ETHA (crypto, ethereum trust etf)

10 - MSTR (crypto)

First Marathon (London) Complete - Faded at 35k despite good fuelling/hydration

Hi all

Looking for some insight into what likely happened physiologically during my first marathon (London) and where my training/pacing may have gone wrong.

Stats:

  • 34M
  • 174cm / 85kg
  • Marathon time: 4:42
  • Average HR for marathon: 170 bpm

From around 35km to 42k, I ended up doing a run/walk and my watch says I walked for about 9 mins total during that section.

What confused me is that my legs actually didn’t feel completely destroyed. They were obviously tired, but I felt like I could have kept moving. The thing that stopped me was my breathing, I just couldn’t get it under control and had to keep slowing/stopping.

What’s odd to me:

  • My average HR for the last 7km was only around 163 bpm
  • On shorter runs I’ve seen HR in the mid-180s
  • So I’m struggling to understand why I felt so out of breath at what seems like a relatively low HR for me

Training background:

  • Longest run was 32km at 6:27/km pace
  • By the end of that run I was exhausted, maybe had a few more km in me but not much
  • Marathon pace ended up around 6:40/km overall

Fuelling/hydration:

  • Carb loaded properly (900g carbs/day for 3 days before race)
  • Hydrated well beforehand
  • Took 2x Precision 1500 electrolyte tabs pre-race
  • Took ~10x 250mg Precision sodium capsules during race
  • Took ~80g carbs/hour during race (40g gel every 30 mins)

So I don’t think this was a classic bonk/dehydration issue.

My questions:

  1. Why would breathing become the limiter even when HR had dropped to 163?
  2. Does this sound more like pacing too hard early, lack of aerobic base/endurance, or something else?
  3. Is it normal for HR to drop late in a marathon even though effort feels massively harder?
  4. Does my 32km training run suggest I simply wasn’t ready to sustain marathon pace for the full distance?

Would really appreciate thoughts from more experienced marathoners/coaches because the breathing side of it confused me the most.

Thank you!
