Today, I had a short phone interview with a third-party recruiter. The recruiter asked, “In any of your previous roles, have you run email campaigns or done social media marketing or written ad content?” Or something to that effect. In my brain, I am thinking, “Nope. I have never done stuff like that.” So I say, “I haven’t specifically done email campaigns, but I’ve done social media campaigns that were targeting users of our supercomputing tools. Writing content and doing social media tiles and making videos were all within my scope.”

Toward the end of the interview, the recruiter said the only thing she was concerned about was that the company really seemed like they wanted someone with email marketing experience. I told her then that I HAVE done email newsletters—but not as part of a previous role, for a conference I chaired that we made content for for over a year. I’m also currently editing content for an email newsletter in my current role 🤦🏼‍♀️ I have also written updates and blurbs and things for upcoming products. Like honestly, with my extensive experience in communications—including science writing, medical writing, editing, copywriting, internal comms, and more—if I can’t figure out how to write content for email marketing campaigns, we have a problem. So should I have just said yes? And where can I learn other things like this or learn what to actually say in an interview? Because that call went horribly, I feel 🤦🏼‍♀️
