Advice for playing on odd meters

Advice for playing on odd meters

I played a jazz jam recently and they called All Blues but in 5/4. I really butchered the melody! And I normally love this tune so much.

Anyways got me practicing odd meters including 3/4. Wes is so natural and plays beautifully with this feel. Folk always say transcription is the answer so transcribed some Hank Mobley on Someday my prince will come. That has helped alot. This article on jazz advice is great too for those who have not seen it: https://www.jazzadvice.com/lessons/how-to-play-in-3-4-time-hank-mobley-on-someday-my-prince-will-come/

What tips do you have for playing in odd meters? Especially as so much vocab is learned in 4/4. Do you adapt 4/4 language or play intuitively?

Specifically how do you go about adapting a melody composed in 4/4 to a 5/4 or 7/4 meter for example? Other than finding a version in that meter and copying that...

Cool Blues Guitar Transcription – Sonny Stitt (Tabs + Notation)

Hi All,

Recently I've been spending abnormal amounts of time transcribing Sonny Stitt stuff for guitar. I've learnt a lot doing it. Perhaps only 3-4 solos in I started to see common patterns and ideas he uses a lot.

Sonny is perfect for learning bebop as his playing is extremely clear and logical. His lines are fantastic and a great workout technically.

Anyways... thought I may as well share my labours.

Hopefully some of you can enjoy grabbing a few lines from this great solo on Parker's Cool Blues: https://youtube.com/watch?v=SS2XRGB2v-8&si=0hrVJhMFfBLmxeCn

I have done lots more transcribing Sonny so if there is any interest - I am happy to share a few more.

Cheers!
