This sentence is generally true, but I know even less about water softeners.

We just moved into our house and we have this system. The big drum is half full with salt and there is some water at the bottom. I assume it’s working well.

My question is, what’s the purpose of the black thanks. The ones on the left say “softener” on them and the one on the right is a de-chlorinator. Do I ever have to do anything with these? Do they need refilled?

Also, if you look at the pipe work, you’ll see the one valve in the middle is off (it looks like it connects the two tanks together). Should that be open?
