I’ve seen everyone here recommending cotton as the fully safe choice for clothes now that plastics are OUT.

So I’ve done a ton of research and turns out…

“According to the Environmental Justice Foundation, cotton accounts for 16%-25% of global insecticide use and 6% of global pesticide use, while covering only 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land.

That means that conventional cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops on Earth

From seed to finished garment, cotton goes through a long chain of treatments. Even if your baby's onesie reads "100% cotton," that label only refers to the fiber — not to the toxic dyes, softeners, wrinkle-resistors, flame retardants, and preservatives applied later.
Many popular baby clothes contain residues of formaldehyde (used to prevent wrinkles and mildew), PFAS (used to repel stains and water), and even BPA (typically found in plastics, but also used in synthetic dyes and finishes).”

Actually the only way you can know if you’re getting safe cotton clothing is if it is certified by GOTS or Okeo Tex. Even “organic cotton” with no certification just means the crop was organic but anything could have happened between picking that cotton and getting a final garment.

I’ve spent so much time curating an all cotton wardrobe and now it just feels as toxic as plastic!

Anyways I thought I would share as I think many people are busy buying up cotton and believe that’s safe.

For my toddlers safety I’m seriously considering getting a harness and leash.

Please don’t comment your judgement on this or that I just need to teach my toddler how to hold hands etc. trust me I am doing it all but at the moment I think this is where we are at.

Looking for one that is made by a reputable company… so far can only find Amazon alphabet soup.

Not looking for the wrist attachment as I’ve heard it’s not safe for kids arms should they fall or pull too hard.

I recently bought several clothing items for my toddler from Quince. They all claimed to be Okeo Tex certified in the description. I am actively working on only buying certified clothing so this was really important to me.

The items showed up and none had an Okeo Tex label. Super sketchy. I contacted Quince and they said “the item isn’t expected to include a physical label.” So I checked with Okeo Tex and yes an actual certified product from them should definitely include a label on the product or packaging.

Anyways I wanted to warn other moms here who might be looking for safer clothing for their kids that this company seems to be doing shady practice. I’ve seen them recommended for bedding as well. Just make sure you check the labels your product comes with. Would definitely recommend Carters and its sub brands instead for clothes as all of their GOTS/Okeo Tex items have always come with the corresponding labeling.

Edit to add: please support carters and it’s brands as much as possible because I saw they are closing 150 stores and it’s literally one of the only brands that provides affordable (especially during sales which happen often) and wide range of okeo Tex / gots clothing
