Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I am genuinely getting sick of companies trying to force me into using apps when I intentionally chose to use their website instead.
Lately even Reddit has been driving me insane with the constant “Open in App” interruptions and aggressive push toward the app. If I opened Reddit in Safari, it’s because I wanted to use Safari. Not because I secretly needed to be redirected into another app download.
And I keep running into this everywhere.
Temu constantly pushes app-only deals and discounts.
Instagram pushes the app nonstop.
Pinterest barely lets me browse for long before throwing app prompts in my face.
Even random retailers that used to function perfectly fine in a mobile browser now seem determined to funnel users into apps.
What bothers ME about it is the privacy side of it.
I do not want every company on earth permanently installed on my phone collecting data, tracking behavior, sending notifications, requesting permissions, running in the background, and building profiles off everything I click on.
Maybe that sounds dramatic to some people, but at a certain point it starts feeling invasive.
And I know companies claim this is all about “better user experience,” but from my perspective it feels more like:
- more tracking
- more engagement monitoring
- more notification pushing
- more data collection
- more pressure to stay inside their ecosystem
I’m not saying apps should disappear completely. Some people prefer them. Fine.
I just think users who WANT to use a browser should still be allowed to do that without being constantly nagged, redirected, restricted, or manipulated into downloading an app.
At minimum, I’d love to see:
- fully functional mobile browser versions remain available
- app popups stay dismissed after closing them once
- fewer app-exclusive deals meant to pressure downloads
- more transparency about what data apps are collecting compared to browser use
Not every company deserves a permanent portal into my pocket.
I honestly can’t tell if I’m becoming an old person yelling at clouds or if other people are getting fed up with this too.
