Stamford claims I have delinquent personal property taxes for vehicles
I received a notice TaxServ that I owe taxes to the city of Stamford from over 12 years ago. The interest and penalties are way more than the tax that is considered delinquent. I moved out of the state before that time so I am not sure how I owe this tax. The letter says I could provide proof to dispute, but this is from more than a decade ago and I am not sure what proof I can provide from back them. Also, how come they have not reached out to me if they thought I had an overdue payment, interesting that they are reaching out to me 12 years later to demand this payment! Why did they wait 12 years to contact me about this? Also, if I do not pay, what kind of measure they have to further pursue this? the town website says they may report it to the credit bureaus. Anyone have any experience with this? I will dispute this but what if they don't agree...

Motor Vehicle Taxes
Per state statute, delinquent motor vehicle taxes are reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). DMV will deny registration renewal on all vehicles in your name and any new vehicle registration until all taxes, interest, and fees are paid in full. To obtain a clearance for DMV, payment can be made in cash, money order, or bank check at the tax office and clearance will be processed in 24-48 hours. CLEARANCE FOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION IS NOT IMMEDIATE! Credit cards, debit cards, or e-checks paid online require 3 business days before a clearance will be issued. There is a 5 day waiting period if paid by personal check. When motor vehicle taxes become delinquent for 1 year, the account will be referred to an outside collection agency. A collection fee of 14% will be added to the bill, and the past due taxes may be reported to a credit bureau.
