Autism is not a Superpower [Update]

TW: Self Harm.

Our son is home. He has some lingering issues from the hospitalization, but hopefully they will pass. Psychological recovery will be a long road.

I wanted to share a few details about how things broke down for him. I hope that it might help another parent one day.

  • The university's special needs and psychological support facilities were very poor. Other universities had so much more--we should have considered that more closely.
  • The ADHD comes with executive functioning issues. This was his first time being fully solely responsible for his own medication. He was not ready for that.
  • He was not a reliable reporter to us. He wanted to be an adult and take care of everything himself. We were out of the loop and took far away to be checking in, in person.
  • Bullies are everywhere, even among groups that purport to be inclusive and accepting.

That's all, really. So far it seems he's coming out of this stronger, rather than shattered. My SO is destroyed inside and I'm just trying to hold everyone and everything together. One day at a time now.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and kind messages. Hug your kids.
