Our classroom pet, a goldfish named Moa, is about 5 or 6 now. He lives in an 80 gallon tank and is now about 5 inches long. The kids love him. Moa was originally a gift from a former student and was a comet "feeder fish".

Recently, especially the last couple days, he is super hungry. He begs for food and then gulps it down immediately.

Any reason for this? Is he a she and preparing to lay eggs?

Is it a growth spurt as some of my students guess?

He's over there begging right now as I type this.

Insight?
