Creepy memory passing trooper at night in rural area years ago still bothers me and wondering what other LEOs might think/say
I’m not in LE in any way, and was looking for “professional speculation” from those who are or have been lol
This happened like 10 years ago while traveling through a very rural area in northeastern Ohio in the late evening hours. My partner was driving on scenic state route type of road, I was in front seat; casually talking about something I’d just got at an auction. Then we see a state patrol cruiser stopped with all its lights on so my partner slows down to maybe 15 mph (+/-) to safely pass them. We were both silent while passing and for a minute or two afterwards before he timidly asked me what I had seen.
I vividly remember seeing a bicycle laying on the pavement in the cruiser’s headlights, a person in a bloody high vis orange vest laying beside it, and the trooper appeared to be frantically attempting medical aid on the person laying there motionless. No other vehicles anywhere around for many miles before this scene or the 2ish miles we had gotten past it.
He confirmed that he saw the same and asked if he should turn around, and I said yes. (I have medical training and will stop at MVCs with obvious injuries if a medic isn’t on scene yet to potentially offer assistance). He pulled into a driveway and turned around, getting back to where the cruiser had been like 10 minutes after initially passing… pitch black and no vehicles anywhere.
Turn around again and stopped where the cruiser was and in the headlights was a decent sized “wet” spot on the pavement and a pair of broken glasses laying beside it… after a few quite moments of staring at the spot, we continued driving without much conversation the remaining hour and a half in the car.
This has repeatedly resurfaced in both of our memories at random times and we still have a VERY unsettling feeling when we think about it. We have searched news and local information for the area to see if we could find anything but came up with nothing every time. Neither of us were tired at all and both 100% sober.
What could have possibly happened? Could we have both seen the exact wrong thing? Genuinely curious what ideas there might be on here lol
