Tacoma or Maverick

Hear me out. I’m not interested in hearing how these aren’t comparable. I’m aware. I’m also aware that 95% of Tacoma owners aren’t really pushing them and could get away with a Maverick anyway. So while they may not be totally comparable on paper, for what 95% of people will actually use them for, they are comparable.

Tacomas are pricey but they hold their value well, are reliable and I find them a bit more exciting than a Maverick. They get bad gas mileage, features seem kind of spartan for the price, it rides like a truck.

Maverick is a ford, reliability is questionable but they can be had relatively cheap (for this market), have a more comfortable ride, awesome mpgs, not the most exciting looking truck but realistically probably all I need. Interior sucks.

Heart says Tacoma, head leans Maverick but there are some head arguments for the Toyota as well… argh

TSP average and median balances by age group

Source: Federal Pension Advisors citing FRTIB data; FersRetirementPlanner.com

The gap between average and median is significant. A few high-balance accounts pull the average up. If you're at the average for your age group, you're ahead of most colleagues. If you're at the median, you're right in the middle of the pack.
One other data point worth knowing: the overall average FERS TSP balance in 2025 is $198,000, according to Federal Pension Advisors citing FRTIB data. The median is only around $50,000. The math holds across the entire federal workforce.

The typical TSP millionaire didn't do anything exotic. They started contributing in their late 20s to early 30s, stayed consistent for about 28 years, and invested primarily in stock funds (C, S, I) rather than the G Fund.

How long does it actually take at different scenarios:
Max out ($24,500/year) starting at 25, 7% return: ~21 years, hitting $1M at age 46.

Max out starting at 35, 7% return: ~23 years, hitting $1M at age 58.

5% plus 5% match at $100,000 salary starting at 25, 7% return: ~33 years, hitting $1M at age 58.

5% plus 5% match at $100,000 salary starting at 35, 7% return: Does not reach $1M by age 62.

That last point matters. The match-only approach works for a functional retirement with a full FERS pension. It does not produce TSP millionaire status unless you start very early.

XL Interior looks nicer than XLT

I’m in the market and checked out a couple. I was kind of surprised how ugly I thought the XLT interior was, with the light gray and blue thing going on. I think it makes it look even cheaper than the subdued XL interior and to think you have to pay a lot more to get the blackout, to make it look more like an XL.

Now I’m leaning XL and doing some of the mods to add XLT features like the cruise control and tailgate dampener.

I wish the XL interior colors were optional on the XLT and I wish the steelies were available in black.
