I find the phrase "That's right up my alley" to be inexplicably vulgar. I get that this is entirely a 'me thing.' I understand the bowling reference. Still, my inner cringe at this turn of phrase is reflexive and I can't help it. I judge when it's used around me. My guess is that I associate it with a long ago encounter. I don't remember the details but the "yuck" of the individual is now tied to the phrase.
For more obvious reasons, I don't care for "rule of thumb."
