To give some context, I am 24 years old and never been handy at all in my life. I could barely use basic tools and never really used my hands at all none did I go to trade school for plumbing or anything. I’ve worked random jobs and earlier this year I was a gas attendant and decided that I wanted more in life and gave plumbing a shot, talked to every plumber that pulled up for gas and eventually I had a small company give me a shot at an apprenticeship. I am over a month in and I just feel like a complete dumbass, I’ve always had trouble following directions and had attention problems growing up and I still have them as an adult which makes it difficult to follow my foreman’s directions, sometimes I miss a step or misunderstand what he is trying to say and fuck things up. Luckily the foremen I’m with has a lot of patience and is a good teacher and he holds my hand step by step for a lot of things when he has time but even with someone like that I just have a lot of trouble comprehending things, especially when it comes to visualizing where he wants certain lines to be and I still kinda struggle using power tools but I’ve gotten better after a month. I don’t mind the labor and physical aspect of plumbing but I just feel like my brain can’t comprehend plumbing at all and I can’t even follow basic directions without missing a step or completely misinterpreting what was said. I mostly do new construction at this company, so all these codes and measurements and what not is so overwhelming to me. It kind of makes me second guess if this career is even for me especially because my foremen keeps making jokes (friendly warnings basically) that i might get fired. In the worst case I do get fired should I try a different career or just find another company? What do you guys think.
