How Did You Afford 2nd Year of SLP Grad School
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to plan ahead financially for SLP grad school and was wondering if anyone knows of scholarships, grants, stipends, or externship funding opportunities that are available during the second year/clinical placement portion of programs.
My tuition for the first year should mostly be covered through assistantship funding, but my concern is the second year. Since clinicals/externships make it difficult to continue a graduate assistantship, I’m expecting a major drop in funding for living expenses and I’m trying to figure out what options people use to bridge that gap.
I’ve heard of some students receiving:
stipends through school districts or clinical placements
scholarships tied to future CF commitments
shortage-area or Department of Education funding
externship support grants for placements in underserved areas
hospital or clinic funding agreements
I also came across something called an “LA scholarship” that supposedly helped cover living expenses during externships (around $5k), but I’m not sure if it still exists.
For context:
I’m from Pennsylvania
open to staying on the East Coast or relocating temporarily
currently rely on public transportation and don’t have a car
tuition itself is less of the issue than living expenses during externship year
I’m estimating I’ll be short about $12k for living expenses during the second year
If anyone knows of programs, states, hospitals, school districts, grants, or scholarships that helped during externship year, I’d really appreciate hearing about them. Even if it’s something specific to your state/program, it would help me know where to look.
