I work at a pet store and we recently got BDFB, so I bought two. At work, they have dehydrated crickets always available. I’m not sure what else they get there, if anything, since I haven’t worked with them there yet. Obviously, pet stores are not the best place for any animal to be (I started working there well before we were forced to get animals, so please don’t come at me), so I don’t necessarily trust what our work system is for feeding.
I brought my two beetles home a few days ago and everything I’ve seen online about feeding is so contradictory. For my own sake, I’m trying to stick to a “schedule,” even though I know they don’t need it. For an example,
Day 1: a carrot slice
Day 2: nothing, but they can keep the carrot if it’s still there
Day 3: 1 or 2 dehydrated bugs (mealworms, crickets, grasshoppers)
Day 4: same as day 2
Repeat. I may not give them anything on the weekends, partially to make it easier on myself but also to avoid overfeeding. The first carrot I gave them, they ate most of it in about 36 hours, then I took it out to give them bugs on “day 3”, which was yesterday. I gave them a mealworm and a grasshopper. The mealworm is almost gone and the grasshopper has some little chunks out of it and one of them loves dragging it around.
I’m not too worried about mold since I put their food in a bowl and not directly in the substrate, but does this sound like a good system? Sorry for the long post, I just want to make sure I’m doing it right!
